In the food industry, maintaining a clean and safe working environment is paramount. This is especially true for flooring, which must meet stringent hygiene standards while also being durable and slip-resistant. The right flooring not only helps prevent accidents but also ensures compliance with health and safety regulations. At PSC Flooring, we specialise in providing safe and hygienic food grade flooring solutions that address these critical needs.

Issues common in Food Grade Flooring

The Hazard of Wet Working Environments

Working in wet conditions is one of the most hazardous environments in the food industry. Slipping is a common cause of injuries, which can lead to serious consequences for both employees and businesses. To mitigate this risk, install flooring that provides a low slip-risk, especially in areas that are frequently washed down. Our hygienic food grade flooring solutions offer excellent slip resistance, ensuring a safer working environment for everyone.

Selecting the Right Product for the Job

Choosing the appropriate flooring product is crucial for maintaining hygiene and safety in food processing areas. At PSC Flooring, our product of choice for food grade environments is the Resdev Pumadur RT. This heavy-duty, resin-rich, trowel-applied polyurethane floor screed is ideal for both wet and dry processing environments. It offers outstanding durability, impact resistance, and chemical resistance, making it perfect for the food, beverage, and chemical industries. The lightly textured finish of Resdev Pumadur RT ensures excellent slip resistance, even in wet conditions.

Case Study: Transforming a Fish Processing Area

Recently, PSC Flooring was called to refurbish a 53-square-meter floor area in a fish processing plant operated by Robert Miller Ltd in West Hanningfield, Essex. The existing latex and resin coats, along with the localised failed floor screed, were beyond repair. Our team recommended a complete refurbishment using a 6mm Resdev RT polyurethane screed, the ideal hygienic food grade flooring product for such an environment.

Preparation and Installation

The preparation for the new flooring involved removing the existing latex, resin coats, and failed screed. We then keyed the existing concrete floor surface using handheld 110v PCD and diamond grinding machines, followed by thorough vacuuming to clean all residues. To ensure a clean edge, 6mm x 6mm saw cuts were made around the perimeter of the floor, door thresholds, drains, and gullies. This process was crucial for toeing in and anchoring the new screed.

We then applied a nominal 6mm heavy-duty Resdev Pumadur RT polyurethane screed in the client’s Chelsea Blue color. The installation process was completed in just two days: one day for floor preparation and one day for screed installation.

Client Satisfaction

The client was extremely satisfied with the outcome, stating, “A complete transformation of a very busy area. The area is an integral part of the processing plant and hence is in constant use. The floor has gone beyond repair and hence required complete refurbishment. PSC has completely transformed the area, on budget and within the timescale we set.”

Benefits of Hygienic Food Grade Flooring

Enhanced Safety and Hygiene

Installing hygienic food grade flooring significantly reduces the risk of slips and falls, which are common in wet working environments. The durable and chemical-resistant properties of Resdev Pumadur RT also ensure that the flooring can withstand rigorous cleaning and harsh conditions without compromising safety.

Compliance with Regulations

Food grade flooring solutions from PSC Flooring help businesses comply with stringent health and safety regulations. By providing a clean and safe working environment, businesses can avoid potential fines and ensure the well-being of their employees.

Longevity and Durability

Our flooring solutions are designed to last, offering excellent resistance to impact, abrasion, and chemicals. This durability means fewer repairs and replacements, saving businesses time and money in the long run.
